Pre-Reading Skills Part 1

Letter recognitionhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Uax85N8B8s

I asked Titus to string letters. He had to look for the letter and then put it on a string so they were facing the right direction.

Phonological Awarenesshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAnlFjjYVyM

Titus and I do Sing, Spell, Read, and Write together. I let him listen to the music so he learns the phonetic sounds of the letters. In this activity, I “tested” his knowledge of the sounds.

  1. Hi Teacher Joy!

Where did you get the Sing, Spell, Read, and Write program? I am new homeschooling mom. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old. I use Handwritting Without Tears but I’m on the look-out for a curriculum for Phonics.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Here is the link for the publishing company that reprinted SSRW. You can check out their contact info and locations. Hope this helps!!! 🙂 I ordered the Level 1 Combo kit. You can also ask them for their readers for All Aboard and On Track, which come separately. After finishing these two books, you will proceed to Off We Go and Raceway, but this is much much later. All these workbooks cover Kindergarten and Prep.

  2. Hi teacher joy my eldest daughter is 2 years old andim wondering if i can start teaching her? She already knows how to count, recognize shapes and colors and some of the alphabets but i dont know if im doing it right. Can u help me? I really want to homeschool all my children but dont know how.

  3. I hope you don’t mind me jumping in here. My sister homeschooled her kids with SSRW. Her kids are now in college both doing well one at the top of her class with scholarships. I teach in nyc and use SSRW the songs targeting the 44 phonemes necessary to read are very powerful. This program moves kids along faster than any other. I also use musical math see http://www.suedickson.com. songs make learning fun a.d faster. To learn more about good curricula to move your kids go to http://www.abcwritestartread.com. best, Christine
